PROTECTION FROM THE HEAT. Despite laws passed in California to protect farm workers from heat stroke, workers continue to fall victim to the sun, in part because of a lack of enforcement. Farm workers in California are lobbying for a bill that would allow workers themselves to enforce shade and water regulations by taking their employers to court. If passed, the law would hold growers responsible for worker safety, as well as their labor contractors.

Guest: Armando Elenes, Regional Director, United Farm Workers, Stockton, CA, www.ufw.org

ALSO, VICTORY FOR WORKER SAFETY. Labor rights groups lobbied in the California state capital of Sacramento to maintain a state law that requires employers to pay for safety equipment such as goggles, boots, respirators and specialty clothing. State authorities were recommending to allow some exceptions to the law.
