“MADE IN L.A.” This is the title of an Emmy award-winning documentary that airs on the public television network PBS in August. The film tells the story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops and who struggle for three years to win basic labor protections from a clothing company. Producers of the film are organizing special screenings across the country.

ALSO, DETENTION CENTER CHANGES. Bills pending in the U.S. Senate address critical problems in immigration detention centers; federal authorities agree to improve conditions at a family detention center in Texas; the federal detention czar meets with detainee hunger strikers in Louisiana jail. These and other developments are the focus of a discussion with an expert in the field.

ALSO, IN SEARCH FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM. A farm worker leader talks about his participation later this week in a broad meeting with Secretary Janet Napolitano, chief of President Obama’s task force on immigration reform. He also comments on a recent town hall meeting in Oregon to urge for health care reform.
