This program analyzes issues such as the lack of informational campaigns, access to voter registration, mailing registered letters and other hurdles that the migrant voter has to overcome to be able to vote in Mexico. The program is part of the monthly series “Sin Fronteras,” a live simulcast with the three-station network Radiarte in Guadalajara, the heart of Western Mexico.

Lira, Patricia Wells and members of Teatro de La Tierra are working on a dramatization of Rodolfo Corky Gonzales' epic poem "Yo Soy Joaquin". Some of Lira's songs have recently been captured in the album "Rolas de Aztlan", a CD celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Delano Grape Strike. Lira and Wells speak about their recent work, which includes an autobiography by the co-founder of the particular theater genre focused on farm workers struggles.

FARMWORKERS IN THE SOUTH. In North Carolina, migrant workers who pick cucumbers were exposed to hazardous conditions in the farms. They didn’t receive breaks to drink water or transportation to go out of the fields. Tobacco workers often suffered “green sickness” from being exposed to the nicotine in the plants. A historic agreement between a labor group and the main growers association promises to change life conditions in the fields. It allows workers to unionize, demand health care and workers’comp, decent wages, and other benefits. How is this agreement working?

The former farm worker also talks about his uphill campaign to unseat an entrenched state senator from the Yakima valley.

Plaintiffs and company representatives are invited to comment. Farm worker Erika Arellano and attorney Silas Sawver from California Rural Legal Assistance talk about the lawsuit. Representatives from the companies that are targetted by the lawsuit were not available for this program.
