HUGO BLANCO: INCIDENT AT BAGUA. On World Environment Day, the Peruvian armed forces clashed with Amazonian natives from the village of Bagua and a number of villagers were killed. Indigenous activists were protesting free trade policies that allow transnational oil and lumber companies to exploit the Peruvian Amazonas rain forest, the “lungs of the world.” A legendary Peruvian Quechua leader comments on these tragic events. A representative of Peruvians living abroad also comments on the case of Ada Cuadros, an immigrant woman facing a sentence to life in prison in Dallas, TX.
Guests:
Hugo Blanco, Veteran social and Quechua leader, former Senator of Peru, Mexico City;
Julio Rojas, National representative, Misión de Amparo y Protección Legal para los Peruanos en el Exterior – MAPLE, New York, NY.
