Accompanied by Sacramento's Camelia Symphonic Orchestra, poets José Montoya and Olivia Castellano read texts written originally by the late farm worker hero and published later in Jacques Levy's book "Cesar Chávez: Autobiography of La Causa." The symphony was composed by director Daniel Kingman.

In this interview, Dr. Molina proposes new agreements to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, modernize cars with catalytic converters in Mexico and other polluted areas, and increase efforts to educate more engineers and scientists in under developed countries. Lira and Wells speak about their recent work, which includes an autobiography by the co-founder of the particular theater genre focused on farm workers struggles.

Nearly a million demonstrators packed the streets of downtown Los Angeles urging the U.S. Senate to pass a reform that protects the civil rights of millions of immigrants. Ruben and Wendy Tapia attended the mega-demonstration and provide an extensive report.
FARMWORKERS IN THE SOUTH. In North Carolina, migrant workers who pick cucumbers were exposed to hazardous conditions in the farms. They didn’t receive breaks to drink water or transportation to go out of the fields. Tobacco workers often suffered “green sickness” from being exposed to the nicotine in the plants. A historic agreement between a labor group and the main growers association promises to change life conditions in the fields. It allows workers to unionize, demand health care and workers’comp, decent wages, and other benefits. How is this agreement working?

Asthma groups from all over the country meet in Washington to discuss strategies in a common effort to get asthma under control and improve health in their home communities. A recent study found that asthma programs that address environmental triggers do help reduce emergency room visits, improve quality of life, and reduce missed days of school and work when they work together with health care providers and local grassroots groups. This edition focuses on a community-health project that provides asthma relief services to Puerto Ricans, a community with a high incidence of asthma attacks and mortality rates.

The former farm worker also talks about his uphill campaign to unseat an entrenched state senator from the Yakima valley.

She is currently organizing community-based groups to help reduce pesticides in the air. This is a pre-taped interview.
ALSO, PESTICIDE VICTIMS IN COURT. Almost 30 farm workers who got sick after being exposed to pesticide drift are suing a grower and the pesticide application company. Plaintiffs and company representatives are invited to comment. Farm worker Erika Arellano and attorney Silas Sawver from California Rural Legal Assistance talk about the lawsuit. Representatives from the companies that are targetted by the lawsuit were not available for this program.

The debate revolves around changing the actual health-risk oriented regulations to cost-benefit standards. Under the new legislation, states would have to ask federal government’s permission before phasing out any of these toxic chemicals. Republicans argue that this is to comply with an international treaty to phase out 12 super toxic chemicals called “The Dirty Dozen”. Environmentalists warn that the health of the environment, farm workers and consumers is at high risk under this bill.

A survivor of Pinochet’s torture chambers, Cruz has prepared an art work entitled “Villa Grimaldi: Archeology of Memory,” which includes a musical suite, a book and a documentary film gathering experiences of artists who survived Villa Grimaldi, one of the most notorious torture center of the U.S.-sponsored dictatorship. The U.S. public television network is planning to distribute the film.

Lawsuits on lead in candy were filed two years ago under California’s Proposition 65 law, which requires warnings on products that can expose the public to cancer-causing substances or reproductive toxins.
