Community colleges are the leading pathway to higher education in the U.S. This system is the choice of preference for Latino and Black students. While California remains the least expensive place to get a community college education in the nation, the state and Virginia had the largest increases in tuition and fees. To address this issue, an initiative in California’s primary ballot (Proposition 92) seeks to lower student fees and limit future fee increases. Ramona Barrio, a college counselor at Glendale Community College in Los Angeles, analyzes this topic.
