E-VERIFY QUESTIONED. House Republicans led by Lamar Smith of Texas are proposing to make the employment eligibility verification program known as E-Verify mandatory nationwide. Critics say the program is prone to error and will cost authorized workers unpaid time off from work and job loss, as well as pushing taxpaying workers into an underground economy and costing billions of dollars in lost tax revenue.
